Vintage Bakelite and plastic jewelry. Celluloid has a camphor smell with hot water. Bakelite leaves a yellow residue with simichrome and has a distinctive scent with hot water. Bakelite bangles have a distinctive musical clinking sound as they bump together on your wrist. Bakelite was invented by the scientist Leo Baekeland working with a combination of phenol and formaldehyde. He filed for the patent in July 13 1907 and was issued the patent on December 7, 1909.
